In addition to replacing the Library’s blogs, BookLetters has everything from lists of bestsellers to new children's chapter books, from "What's on the Air this Weekend" to teen reads, from award winners to staff suggestions. Be sure to take a look at the lists especially about children’s books.

The President Goes to School

Did you see that President Obama and his wife visited a school and read to a 2nd grade class? Well, being a librarian, when I saw that, I immediately wondered, "What book did they read?"

According to the White House blog, the book in question was The Moon Over Star by Dianna Hutts Aston, illustrated by Jerry Pinkey. Here's the story: On her family's farm in the town of Star, eight-year-old Mae eagerly follows the progress of the 1969 Apollo 11 flight and moon landing and dreams that she might one day be an astronaut, too.

Black History Month

It's February, so celebrate Black History Month!

Come on in to Children's Library and check out some of the wonderful books we have on display. There are so many to choose from, but here's one of my favorites, a book of African-American folklore by Virginia Hamilton: The People Could Fly.

Here's something else you might want to look at - a blog called The Brown Bookshelf is having a month-long series of interviews with 28 of the best African-American creators of children's literature.

And don't forget our Silicon Valley Reads program. This week's special program for a the whole family should be fantastic!

Hi Everyone- Happy Friday!

We've got some great programs in the next week, coming to a Palo Alto library branch near you!

On Sunday, February 1st we'll have Yoga with Shyamoli at the Children's Library. This program is for kids ages 3-6 with an adult chaperone. The program is 2-2:45pm. Come have fun while you learn some new yoga positions!

On Saturday, February 7th at 2:30pm our monthly Saturday Showcase will take place at Mitchell Park Library. Come watch as Hazuki Katoaka practices the kamishibai (paper theater), using picture cards to illustrate her stories. This program is for all ages- bring the whole family!

In addition, we've got our weekly storytimes at the various library branches:

- Monday, 2/2- Toddler Storytime at Children's Library- 10 OR 11am

- Tuesday, 2/3- Preschool Storytime at Children's Library- 10am

- Tuesday, 2/3- Baby Storytime at College Terrace Library (the last day of this eight week session is February 27th)

- Friday, 2/6- Toddler (10am) & Preschool (11am) Storytimes at Mitchell Park Library

Did you know that we feature book & CD sets in our children's collection? These sets are great for helping kids learn how to read, since they can see the words in the book as they listen to the audio track on the CD. We also have several sets to help your child learn another language, such as Spanish, French, or Italian. We just received a bunch of great new readalongs, so come on in to Children's Library or Mitchell Park and check them out. Below I have highlighted a few of my favorites:

The Saggy Baggy Elephant, by Byron Jackson

When I was in preschool, I listened to this readalong non-stop in the car. Of course, my childhood version was a cassette, not a CD! But even all these years later, the story of the little elephant Sooki and his saggy, baggy grey skin still resonates as a wonderful tale of self-acceptance.

This readalong version of the Little Golden Book classic features clear, pleasant narration and Gustaf Tenggren's whimsical illustrations.

Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale, by Carmen Agra Deedy

The lovely, lush illustrations of this book are what initially drew me to it. It's evident that lots of care was put into crafting this retelling of the Cuban folktale. Apparently, the Odyssey award panel thought the same thing, because Martina was just named an Odyssey Honor Book for 2009. The Odyssey awards are given each year to audiobooks that show exemplary production values.

A Visit to Grandma, by Berlitz Kids

We have several titles in the Berlitz Kids "Adventures with Nicholas" collection. One of these titles is A Visit to Grandma, which we have available in three languages: Spanish, French and Italian. These books feature colorful illustrations and bilingual text (English and another language). If your child is interested in learning another language you might want to consider this series. They're a nice introduction to other languages, and the audio track helps to reinforce the language learning aspect.

The winners of the 2009 American Library Association (ALA) awards have been announced:

The winner of the 2009 Newbery Medal is author Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. Neil Gaiman is having a great start to 2009. In addition to winning the Newbery, the movie version of his 2002 book Coraline is being released in theaters on February 6th.

Some of you may have been fortunate enough to hear Mr. Gaiman read from The Graveyard Book when he was in Palo Alto a few months ago. Check it out to read the story of Nobody Owens, who is a normal boy, except that he has been raised by ghosts and other denizens of the graveyard. Spooky!

We also have this book available in audiobook format.

The winner of the 2009 Caldecott Medal is illustrator Beth Krommes' The House in the Night, written by Susan Marie Swanson. Ms. Krommes has illustrated several other books, including Grandmother Winter and Butterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow.

The House in the Night features soothing black, white and yellow illustrations that depict the light that makes the house in the night a home filled with light.

In addition to the Newbery and Caldecott Medals each year, the ALA also awards several Newbery and Caldecott Honor Books and numerous other awards. On the Edge of Our Seats!

Every January since 1922, the American Library Association announces 2 of the most prestigious awards given for children's literature. These are the Caldecott Medal and the Newbery Medal. The Caldecott was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator, Randolph Caldecott and is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller, John Newbery, and is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Both medals are given annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. For weeks prior to the announcement, lovers of children's literature start speculating about who the winners will be. Every year I wager a little bet with myself but I have yet to guess the correct winners. If you're interested in learning more about these awards and how the voting process works go to http://www.ala.org/ and click away! The winners will be announced at a press conference on Monday January, 26 so check online sometime that day. Here are the 2008 winners:

Manners and Responsibility

Emily and her friend Ethan demonstrate what manners to use every day.

Ryan Respects by Virginia Kroll
Ryan thinks it is funny to call the slowest runner in his class "Doug the Slug," until his older brother teases him for having a teddy bear. A great book for kindergartners.

Nobunny's Perfect by Anna Dewdney
Bunnies, who slurp their juice, forget to say "please," and bite their friends, learn about good manners.

Please is a Good Word to Say by Barbara Joose
Harriet gives examples of polite words and expressions to use in various social situations to make them more pleasant.

Mind Your Manners, B.B. Wolf by Judy Sierra
When B.B. Wolf, who now lives in the Villain Villa Retirement Residence, is invited to the library for a storybook tea, he is careful to follow the advice of his crocodile friend and impresses everyone with how polite he can be. This book is a crowd-pleaser and one of my favorite books on manners.

Of course- how could we not include this one?!

Reading to Babies

Now that Baby Storytime is starting again, here are some ideas for reading to your baby. One of the blogs I read, The Well-Read Child, had a great list of tips for reading to babies a while back. Here is the link so you can read it yourself. I agree that board books are great for little ones who who don't yet have down the art of turning pages. I especially like:

Clap Hands

Helen Oxenbury is a marvel - her books for babies are among the best. Several are board books. Check them out!

Here are some of my favorite titles for you to handle or when your child is past the rough-on-books stage.

My First Mother Goose

Rosemary Wells' large, bright illustrations are a perfect match for these simple nursery rhymes. The rhythm and rhyme make Mother Goose a great choice for reading aloud to babies.

Vegetable Garden

Douglas Florian is another author with easy picture books for young ones.

Tom and Pippo See the Moon

This is one of a series of books by Helen Oxenbury about Tom and his toy monkey Pippo.

Happy new year!

Start off 2009 with a wonderful program of stories to spark the imagination. The first Saturday Showcase of the year, starring storyteller Joy Swift, will be tomorrow, Sat., Jan. 3 at 2:30 pm at the Mitchell Park Library. All ages are welcome, and the event is sponsored by the Friends of the Palo Alto Library.

Baby Storytime starts up again next Tuesday at 11 am for an 8-week session at the College Terrace Library. Babies ages 6 - 18 months and their parents or caregivers will listen to delightful songs and stories.

Later on this month, the Annual Children's Library Storytelling Festival returns for a whole afternoon of traditional storytelling by a variety of Bay Area tellers. Stop by for some treats and stories any time from 1 - 5 pm on Sunday, January 25. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

Regular storytimes as usual this week.

Vacation Week #2

One down and one to go! By now, the kids celebrating Christmas and Hanukkah are winding down from all the excitement and others are enjoying a (hopefully) restful and wonderful vacation from their usual activities, like school! Since we have been lucky enough to get some significant rainfall, the mountains have been covered by heaps of powdered snow....a skier's dream! If you and your family are heading to a winter wonderland, be sure to take along some wonderful books to read aloud, next to a roaring fire, each evening. I've listed some old favorites and some newer ones too. One customer noticed that we haven't done any book reviews for the preschool set. So here are my favorite funny books for ages 2-4. We all need to have a little laugh before the holidays! Click on the titles to reserve any of these books.

Bark, George by Jules Feiffer
For ages 2-4- When George's mother tells her son to bark, he meows. She patiently explains that "Cats go meow. Dogs go arf. Now, bark, George." But he quacks! Then oinks. Then moos. A funny story and a storytime pleaser!

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin
For ages 3-5- When Farmer Brown's cows find a typewriter in the barn they start making demands, and go on strike when the farmer refuses to give them what they want. If you like this book, you might want to read her other stories-- Duck for President, Dooby Dooby Moo, Giggle, Giggle Quack & Diary of a Fly (also Spider, Worm).

Day Out with Daddy by Stephen Cook
For ages 3-5-- A young boy tells his own version of the day he spends with Daddy while Mommy is out of town, and Mommy vows never to miss all the "fun" again. This reminds me of spending time with my Dad while my Mom was working. A hilarious read! Dads should check this book out!

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka
For ages 4-5- The wolf gives his own outlandish version of what really happened when he tangled with the three little pigs. A funny version of an old classic fairy tale. In the library world, we call these "Fractured Fairy Tales." Check out his others-- The Book that Jack Wrote and The Frog Prince, Continued.

Silly Sally by Audrey Wood

A rhyming story of Silly Sally, who makes many friends as she travels to town--backward and upside down. Sally will just make you laugh!

Program Friday is going to be very short and sweet today. Storytimes at Children's Library will happen as regularly scheduled next week (Toddlers: Monday at 10 OR 11am, Preschoolers: Tuesday at 10am), but Mitchell Park's Friday storytimes will not occur since all Palo Alto City Libraries will be closed Wednesday 12/24 through Friday 12/26. And now, onto the snowmen! I thought that since so much snow is falling in the Sierras right now, and since some of you may be heading to the snow in the next week or two, I'd share my favorite snowman books with you. And even if you won't be traveling to the snow take a look at this cute site, where you can make your own virtual snowman!

All You Need for a Snowman, by Alice Schertle

What do you need to build a snowman? Lots of different items, according to the kids in this book. Through teamwork, they build a huge snowman and a friend for him too.

Barbara Lavalee (Mama, Do You Love Me) provides cute and colorful illustrations.

Martin MacGregor's Snowman, by Lisa Broadie Cook

Martin MacGregor loves to build snowmen, but the weather outside is warm and bright without a hint of snow! He tries to be patient, but finally decides he must find a way to make a snowman without snow.

This humorous book will resonate with families whose children sometimes just can't wait for the fun to begin.

Snowmen at Night, by Caralyn Buehner

What do snowmen do at night when we're sound asleep? They bowl, play baseball, have wild dance parties, and generally enjoy being snowmen. You'll love the beautiful illustrations and the silliness of this book, created by husband and wife Mark and Caralyn Buehner.

In the mood for baking?

It's sometimes difficult to find simple recipes that the whole family can make together. Kids always want to help, or do it themselves!

Here are a few recipes that are very simple and require minimal adult supervision:

Chinese Cookies (a recipe from my grandmother)

6oz. butterscotch chips

6oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips

1c. peanuts

1c. chow mein noodles

Place butterscotch and chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on medium power for two minutes. Stir, then microwave in one minute increments, stopping to stir each time, until the chips are melted and smooth.

Pour peanuts and chow mein noodles into the melted chip mixture and stir.

Drop teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheets lined with waxed paper. Let sit to harden, or speed up the process by placing cookie sheets in the freezer for fifteen minutes.

Note: If someone has a peanut allergy, you can substitute another type of nut, sunflower seeds, etc.

Stained Glass Fudge (from the book Gifts to Make and Eat, by Elizabeth MacLeod)

1 1/2 lbs white chocolate, broken into pieces

1 (10oz) can sweetened condensed milk

1/8 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups mini gumdrops (all colors except black)

1/2 tsp. vanilla

In a large microwavable bowl, combine the chocolate, milk and salt. Microwave on high for 3-5 minutes, stirring every 90 seconds, until the chocolate is melted. Stir in gumdrops and vanilla. Pour fudge into an 8-inch square pan. Refrigerate for two hours or until firm. It will keep for up to two weeks if kept covered in the fridge.

Bake and Make Amazing Cookies

Whenever there's a big storm or a lot of rain outside I always think of the Disney movie Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day. The scene where Pooh floats down the river with his top half stuck inside a honey pot is so funny! Today I thought I'd share with you a few of my favorite rainy day books and movies. These make me feel warm and cozy, and make the time fly by. Enjoy! (to place a hold on any item just click on the title)

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: This DVD is one of my favorites. It includes all of Disney's Winnie the Pooh adventures, including Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day. I think that Sterling Holloway, as the voice of Winnie the Pooh, is one of the best voice actors ever.

The Mole Sisters and the Rainy Day: This tiny little picture book is so cute! The two mole sisters are concerned when their burrow develops a leak, but they convince themselves that the rain can't last forever. Or can it?

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing: Whenever I need a book to make me laugh on a cold day this is the one I choose. Judy Blume's first book about Peter, Fudge, and the rest of the Hatcher family is hilarious.

Also try: The Ultimate Indoor Games Book. It's filled with simple games and activities to keep the kids busy all day.

The Friends of the Library booksale is this weekend, Sat the 13th and Sun. the 14th at the Cubberley Community Center. See their website for times and exact location.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, Magician Brian Scott returns to Children's Library at 3:30 pm to entertain children of all ages. Come see a great magic show! This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Palo Alto Library.

Game Day also returns to Children's Library on Fri., Dec. 19 at 2 pm. Children ages 5 and up are welcome to come for an afternoon of board games - bring your own or use the library's games.

Storytimes continue as usual.

The Peace Corps for Kids

A new website shows kids what life is like in the Peace Corps. Visiting the fictional village of Wanzuzu, they will try to solve eight different challenges by coming up with sustainable solutions. During the course of their adventures they will work with fictional villagers and other volunteers to solve the critical issues that the village faces in areas such as disease, sanitation, contaminated soil, etc.

Maybe you have a future real Peace Corps volunteer in your family or school!

Cozy Crafts

As we head into the coldest months of the year, I find that there's nothing more soothing to me than curling up on the couch with a cross-stitch project. When I was a little girl my grandmother taught me to sew and cross-stitch, and I am so glad now that I have these skills. My grandmother's sewing knowledge was a gift I was happy to receive!

If you'd like to teach your children or grandchildren how to sew, but aren't quite sure how to go about it, try some books from the library. We have several that are meant to help beginners learn the basics of sewing. A few are listed below. Fifth grader Hart Evans doesn't much care for choir class. As usual, Andrew Clements uses his gift of writing realistic school stories to create an entertaining and touching story.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, by Barbara Robinson

The six Herdman siblings aren't the kind of kids you'd usually find hanging around a church. They steal and smoke cigars, and are rough and rowdy. But when they show up at church to try out for the Christmas play- and then win the lead roles!- everyone is in for a big surprise. Narrator Elaine Stritch does a great job bringing Barbara Robinson's story to life.

A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens

What could be better than combining Charles Dickens' beloved Christmas tale with Jim Dale's (narrator of the Harry Potter books) fabulous voice? Although this production presents the story in its entirety, the sound effects and Dale's varied voices should hold childrens' attention. A true Christmas masterpiece.

When Santa Fell to Earth, by Cornelia Funke

This is the story of what happens when Santa's sleigh, in need of repair, falls to Earth. Santa is befriended by two children who are in need of a little holiday magic, and together the three of them must find Santa's invisible reindeer, fix the sleigh, and fight to save Christmas from the devious plans of Gerold Geronimus Goblynch. A charming book, read by author Cornelia Funke.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

By the sounds of things in the library and at storytime, cold season is upon us. It's time to harp on the kids to wash their hands...ALOT. Did you know that a majority of kids get about 12 colds per year? And most are spread by hand to hand contact, which means you can not bug your child enough to wash his/her hands often. Where's Baby Storytime....

I know many parents are suffering from Baby Storytime withdrawal. Our next session starts on Tuesday, January 6 at 11 a.m. at College Terrace Library (2300 Wellesley). Here are some of my favorite baby books to tide you over until January.

My First Baby Signs by Linda Acredolo
Teach your child how to communicate using baby signs. I've seen it in action-- it actually works! Also try her adult book- Baby Signs: How to Talk to Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk.

Olivia Counts by Ian Falconer
My favorite pig teaches babies how to count. Olivia is a picture book series. This means that as your baby grows up, she can read longer stories about Olivia.

Mommy Hugs by Karen Katz
A loving mother counts the hugs she gives to her baby throughout the day. I highly recommend Karen Katz books to babies and toddlers. Also try Ten Tiny Tickles.

Over in the Ocean by Marianne Collins Berkes
Count, clap, and sing the words in this book about the coral reef to the rhythm of Over in the Meadow.

Today is last day for Children's Library's and Youth Services' Supervising Librarian, Melinda Wing. Aloha, Melinda (she's retiring to Hawaii). You will be missed!

There are some great programs coming up this week, so check your calendars! Tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 15 from 2:30 - 3:30 is the popular Paws to Read program at Children's Library, where kids can practice their reading skills by reading to therapy dogs. Attendance is on a first come, first served basis.

Wednesday Nov. 19th, brings the Opera Piccola Theater Troupe to the Mitchell Park Library at 3:30 pm. This program, sponsored by the Friends of the Palo Alto Library, is for children ages 5 and up. Opera Piccola is a theater company that celebrates diverse cultures in their performances.

On Thursday, Nov. 20th, Children's Library hosts its monthly Afterschool Special. This month is the Dear Mr. President Writing Contest Celebration. We will announce the winners, so come hear the winning contest essays and stay for treats. The contest and program are sponsored by Klutz Press and the Friends of the Palo Alto Library.

A Message from the Library Fairy

As many of you know, I have a mailbox on the librarians' desk at Children's Library. I promise you that I read all of my letters, although I have not answered them recently. But there is good news! I now have my own email account! It is: libraryfairy@cityofpaloalto.org. I will attempt to answer any emails that children send me.

Some of you have asked where I live. I do visit all the Palo Alto libraries, but most of the time I am at Children's Library. You are welcome to take a look at my front door there, but if you knock I may not answer. I am quite shy around people, you know. But I love getting mail.

Another question I have gotten is about books I like. Here is one you might try:

The Fairies' Ring: A Book of Stories and Poems. I bet you'll love it, too. The librarians tell me that if you click on the title and you may reserve the book.

This week's Program Friday update will be short and sweet:

- This weekend, November 8th and 9th, the Friends of the Palo Alto Library are hosting their monthly booksales at Cubberley Community Center. Stop in to find some great buys for you and your family. They have books, magazines, and media- and all proceeds support the library!

- Please note that all Palo Alto Library branches will be closed on Tuesday, November 11th in observance of Veteran's Day. We will re-open at our regular times on Wednesday the 12th.

- Paws to Read is back! Our monthly "practice reading to a dog" program is returning, and remember- there are no sign-ups required. The program is "first-come, first-served." It runs from 2:30-3:30pm on Saturday, November 15th at Children's Library. This program is appropriate for participation by children who are learning to read and would like practice reading to a non-judgemental furry friend. We hope to see you there!

What's new in children's music?

Mary Poppins: Original Movie Soundtrack

When my sister was in preschool, Mary Poppins was her favorite movie. She insisted on watching it nearly every day (and it's a LONG movie!), and I still know all of the songs from the soundtrack by heart. This new 2-disc soundtrack collection features not only music from the movie but also lots of bonus material and interviews with the composers the Sherman Brothers.

Rocketship Run, by the Laurie Berkner Band

Laurie Berkner has had a busy few years. She released a best-selling concert DVD- "We Are... the Laurie Berkner Band," she has a regular role on "Jack's Big Music Show" on NOGGIN, and she released her first studio album in six years! This CD features 24 original new songs written by Laurie Berkner and her bandmates. It's sure to get you singing and dancing along!

Ralph's World: The Rhyming Circus, by Ralph Covert

Before I was a librarian, I was a preschool teacher. We listened to lots of music in the classroom, and some of it was saccharine and obnoxious. But I always enjoyed listening to Ralph's World CDs. In fact, his Happy Lemons CD is one of my very favorites- for kids or otherwise. Because of this, I love to recommend his CDs to parents wanting smart, fun music that they can enjoy with their kids. Try it- you'll like it!

Leaves, Leaves Everywhere...

After the much needed rain on Friday and Saturday, I had a front-yard full of leaves that had fallen from my huge liquidambar tree. So I spent yesterday afternoon raking and weeding, and I thought about some of the great leaf books we have at the library.

Here are my favorites:

Leaf Man, by Lois Ehlert

Ehlert tells the story of a leaf man who blows from town to town. The reader never knows quite where he'll land or what he'll see on the way. The pictures in this story are fabulous. They're created from color copies of leaves that Ehlert and her friends collected. Kids will have a great time finding the cows, birds, and fish made from leaves on each page. And, as usual in Ehlert's books, there are additional pages of information in the back about leaves and trees. Also to try by Lois Ehlert: Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf

Cinnamon Hen's Autumn Day, by Sandra Dutton

Cinnamon Hen has a yard full of leaves to rake, and is very happy to rake them until Mr. Rabbit comes along and convinces her to hire him to rake them instead. Reluctantly, Cinnamon Hen agrees. But the whole time Mr. Rabbit is raking she longs to be outside raking them herself. Eventually, she offers to rake her neighbor's yard instead and everyone is happy. This story is cute, and it might even inspire your little ones to rake the leaves in your yard!

Fletcher and the Falling Leaves, by Julia Rawlinson

This story was new to me this year, and I'm so glad I found it. Fletcher is a fox kit who has a favorite tree. Fletcher considers the tree to be his friend, so he is very distraught when the tree begins to lose its leaves. Fletcher's mom tries to tell him the tree is fine, but Fletcher is not convinced. He tries everything to keep the leaves from falling off- from holding them on for hours on end to taping the leaves to the branches. Of course, nothing works and the tree is eventually bare. But Fletcher finds that the tree has a surprise in store for him one frosty winter morning.

Whoo Hoo....Program Friday

After a night of trick or treating, wouldn't it be great to kick back at Mitchell Park Library for some stories told by Kirk Waller, sometimes through song or mime, but always exciting and entertaining! The show starts at 2:30 on November 1.

On Sunday, November 2, Shyamoli is back to help you and your kids unwind after a big weekend with some yoga poses and stretches. This session begins at 2pm at Children's Library. For this program, parents must stay and participate with your child.

Been There, Wish I Had Done That

The thing that I most regret not doing when my kids were young is keeping a journal or scrap book of their milestones..... you know, notating the days at the park when they could finally reach the bar or the hilarious things they'd say when they thought they were actually reading! It's not the birthdays, holidays or graduations; I'm talking about the seemingly small things that are easily forgotten but shouldn't be. Recently, my younger son, who is in grad school, had an assignment that required him to ask me lots of questions about his infancy and toddler days. I was astounded (and saddened) when I realized how little I actually remember! If only I had a journal that I could pull out to remind me about his favorite book, song or food! I answered his questions but not without a certain amount of embellishment! So, here's my advice to all you young parents out there! It's never too late to begin so I found some great books about scrapbooking with kids....what a perfect rainy day project! You can write the words and let the kids decorate the pages. Try these:

Children's Poet Laureate Announced

The Poetry Foundation announced the second Children's Poet Laureate - Mary Ann Hoberman. Jack Prelutsky won the honor last year. The Library owns a number of wonderful books by Ms. Hoberman, including The Llama who Had No Pajama. Here's a part of one of the poems I especially like, called "Changing."

In addition to poetry, Hoberman has written picture books and story collections, such as You Read to Me, I'll Read to You.

We have some really unique programs coming up this week!

First, we have a Day of the Dead Celebration (Wednesday, October 15th at 3:30pm, Children's Library, Ages 5 & up)

This program is being presented by librarian Beth Nord. During the program Beth will share her knowledge of the Latin American holiday Dia de los Muertos. There will be stories, traditional bread, and Mexican hot chocolate!

Next, our popular Paws to Read program is returning again. This program pairs trained companion dogs with beginning readers who can spend 15 minutes reading to the dogs. This month's session is already full, but beginning next month the program will be "first come, first served." We hope to see you there!

Additionally, we have our regular toddler and preschool storytimes happening next week (with the exception of the Monday holiday):

Election games

With only a few weeks left until the presidential election, it's not just adults paying attention to politics. Even though kids can't vote, they are learning a lot about presidential politics from their teachers and classmates. I hear lots of buzz around the library from the kids, regarding the candidates and their views! Getting kids involved in the election process is a good way to help them become concerned, well-informed voters when they get older.

School Library Journal recently published an article highlighting some websites that can get kids learning about politics in fun ways. My two favorites are games that would be appropriate for kids in upper elementary grades and older. They are: (click on the title for a link to the site)

Budget Hero: This game allows players to adjust spending in areas such as defense, healthcare, and social security, all the while keeping an eye on the deficit. It teaches kids that there is a consequence for every action taken by the politicians, and that the U.S. budget is a complex balancing act. Take a look at the game- it's a lot more fun than I make it sound!

eLECTIONS: This game is modeled after the game "Life." It has a board game format, where players take turns with the spinner, and move the number of steps the spinner directs them to. The game can be played between two or three players, with one of the players being the computer if desired. Players have to make decisions about which states to campaign in, and what fundraisers and media events they should attend.

If you have a politically-minded kid in your household, they should enjoy these fun, challenging games. And the best part- they're online and free!

I could hardly fit all the activities offered this month onto the calendar! Starting with this evening, Children's Library will host Graeme Base, talented children's author, at 6pm. This should be fascinating! All of you writers out there better get busy! You have a whole month to pull together an essay answering the question, "What should the next president do during his 4 year term?" Over the weekend, on Saturday, a wonderful storyteller, Jean Ellisen, will be telling mysterious tales at Mitchell Park at 2:30. Neil Gaiman will be at Spangenberg Theater on Saturday night at 7:30 pm to read from his most recent book, The Graveyard Book. Sounds spooky! By now you'll be exhausted from all the activities so maybe a little yoga with your child would be perfect! Shyamoli will be at Children's Library on Sunday at 2 pm to lead a yoga class for parents and kids! Last, but not least, next Friday we are having another Game Day at 2 pm at Children's. Bring your own board game or use one of ours.....don't forget though, winning is not the important thing, it's how you play the game!! See you at the library!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins

Those of you who have been in the Bay Area a while will probably know about this, but for all you newcomers, The Pumpkin Festival is an event not to be missed! It's an annual happening that lasts for about 3 weeks, culminating in a weekend long festival in Half Moon Bay; this year the dates are October 18 & 19. Prior to that weekend, the open fields along Hwy 92 are filled with all sizes and colors of pumpkins, big hay bales, dried corn stalks, pony rides for the kids and lots of outdoor activities. It's truly a spectacle! The only downside is the traffic jam you are bound to encounter. So get prepared with some music CDs or talking books to keep the kids entertained and your sanity intact! Did you know that September is Library Card Sign-Up Month? And, did you know that you can get a free library card for your child and yourself at any of the five Palo Alto City Library branches? It only takes a few minutes to get a card, but the rewards are endless!

Here are some of the benefits of having a Palo Alto City Library card:

- the ability to place requests for and check out books, DVDs, magazines, music CDs, audiobooks and more at the five Palo Alto City Library branches

- access to dozens of online databases and downloadable e-books and audiobooks, including medical journals, reference materials, and business information

All you need in order to get a card is a photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc) and proof of your address, if it's not listed on your ID (a piece of mail works fine). If you're getting a card for your child, your ID will work for them. And there is no minimum age requirement for getting a card, so start them out young to grow into avid library users!

Creative Writing For Kids

During the month of October the Youth Services Department of the library will be having a writing contest for kids. In preparation for this, I thought it might be helpful to make everyone aware of different resources available to help children in their creative writing adventure. Because our contest already has a theme, it may not take as much prodding to get those creative juices flowing, but just in case, this web site may be helpful: http://www.sheldonoberman.com/songpoem.htm. This site is an exercise in language development, however, the main purpose is for the child to have fun while stretching her vocabulary. A book that might come in handy is called, You Can Write A Story ! And another is called, Career Ideas For Kids Who Like Writing.

Bike Safety

I know there is a Bicycle Safety week coming up but I can't resist posting about it now. Since school started, I've observed some pretty scary maneuvers by kids of all ages! It wouldn't hurt to review things like how to put your helmet on properly. When I see a kid riding down the street with his helmet hanging on the back of his head, or better yet, unbuckled, I want to scream! This is when I think instilling a little fear is not such a bad thing! Unfortunately, there are very few books on bike safety but I did find two good web sites that go over the basic things all children should know before heading out on their bikes : http://kidshealth.org/kid/watch/out/bike_safety.html or http://health.kaboose.com/active-kids/kids-on-bikes.html We have great bike paths and perfect biking weather so let's make it a safe ride!

The library has some great new books that are filled with game and craft ideas to help fill these last few weeks of summer. Check them out!

The Scrapbooker's Idea Book, by Kathy Ross

This book has some fun low- and no-cost ideas for re-using household items and turning them into scrapbooking materials. From gift bag albums to tissue box photo frames, your child will have a great time being creative!

Extreme Balloon Tying, by Shar Levine & Michael Ouchi

If your child is fascinated by balloon animals, this is a good book to check out. It provides information about what supplies your child will need to make her own balloon creations, as well as providing techniques and step-by-step directions for making dozens of figures.

24 Games You Can Play on a Checkerboard, by Carol Lynch Williams

Do you need some new ideas for games to play at home? This colorfully illustrated book features the directions for 24 games that can be played on a checkerboard with normal checkers. You'll learn a Turkish version of checkers called Dama, a Japanese version called Go-Moku, and a simple game called Catching the Pigs, among others.

I'm one of the library's resident audio book fanatics, and it has been a while since I have highlighted the wonderful new children's audiobooks we have in the library, so here it goes:

Alex and the Ironic Gentleman, by Adrienne Kress

This book is one of my all-time favorites. New author Adrienne Kress has created Alex (short for Alexandra) to be a wonderfully smart, brave, spunky heroine, and narrator Christopher Lane does a phenomenal job in bringing Alex's voice to life. Orphaned Alex lives with her loving uncle and attends a private school. Life is ordinary until her teacher is kidnapped by pirates and Alex must come to his rescue. Along the way she is held hostage by little old ladies, she reasons with an overly-dramatic octopus, and she works to find buried treasure! A "must listen" adventure.

The "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, by Rick Riordan

(Book 1: The Lightning Thief)

In my opinion, one of the best children's fantasy series ever. Percy and his friends are realistic, likeable characters who struggle with the same issues all kids do: making friends and fitting in, doing the right thing, and finding who they really are. The only difference is that they are demi-gods (half Greek god, half human) who must fight monsters and protect the world from the evil titans. These books (four in the series so far) are exciting, humorous, and equally appealing to boys and girls. Narrator Jesse Bernstein expertly voices the series. I can't wait for the next one!

Clemency Pogue: Fairy Killer, by J.T. Petty

If you're looking for a short, fun, magical book, look no further than Clemency Pogue: Fairy Killer, narrated by L.J. Ganser. As she is walking through the woods one day, Clemency is attacked by an evil fairy. In her attempt to save herself, Clemency shouts "I don't believe in fairies!" seven times. The end result is that, in addition to killing the attacking fairy, Clemency has also accidentally killed six other fairies, many of whom are good. With the help of a hobgoblin, Clemency must then travel around the world to re-animate the fairies and help the humans the fairies were assisting. There are now two sequels to Clemency Pogue: Fairy Killer, both of which the library owns, either in book form or downloadable audio format:

The End is Near!

The end of summer, that is. This is abundantly clear here at the library, because the shelves are getting full of books that have traveled to parts unknown the past 2 months. It happens every year, as families begin to arrive home and unpack suitcases, they eventually run across their library books. It seems to be a good time for "cleaning house" and starting new and what better way to rid your clutter, than to make sure all your borrowed books are returned on time. This is a wonderful thing, but leaves all of us scratching our heads, wondering how to make room for all the thousands of books. Right now, as I write this, there are so many terrific new books, just longing and waiting to be checked out. I can hardly stand the thought of nobody enjoying them!! Here's a sample:

Anybody who watches television at all these days has probably heard that our children, in the US, are overweight and not doing enough physical activity. If your child comes home after a full day of school wanting to "veg " in front of the TV with a big bowl of chips on his/her lap, it shouldn't be a surprise that he may be lacking in the exercise and nutrition department. If you start a routine, (when they are young enough to have no choice and old enough to really help), of planning, shopping for, and finally, preparing your evening meal, it will instill in your child the quality of being helpful and the satisfaction of creating something that bonds the whole family. It's like money in the bank. Just think of this: the child can read the recipe, which will improve reading skills, the parent can explain the benefits of eating fresh food and therefore teaching a little nutrition as you go. Imagine the gigantic smile on your child's face when you transfer his or her masterpiece to a serving dish for presentation to the rest of your family, who will be waiting patiently for the first bite! We are so lucky to live in an area where fresh produce is abundant.......both vegetables and fruit. And the weather....there is rarely an excuse that prohibits anyone from getting outside to do SOMETHING! Now, doesn't this sound better than rushing to McDonald's for a large fries and a greasy burger? But as we all know, secrets have a way of coming out. His older teenage brother, Rodrick, steals his diary and threatens to reveal his deep dark secret. The great thing about this series is you don't have to read them in order. The drawings and captions are so funny! One of my top 10 books for 2008.

Hi everyone!
As usual, we have some great programs coming up this week...
*Our Wacky Wednesday program on July 23 will take place at Mitchell Park Library at 3:30pm, and will feature Python Ron and his menagerie of reptiles! This all-ages program features creatures such as 18-foot pythons and 4-foot long lizards. The brave ones in the audience will even be able to touch some of the creatures! Please plan to join us for this educational and entertaining program. And don't forget your picnic blanket or beach towel to sit on- this program will take place on the lawn outside the south entrance to Mitchell Park Library.
*The summer Baby Storytime session is going strong at Downtown Library. This program, for ages 6-18 months, takes place on Tuesday mornings at 11am through August 19th. Join us for lap bounces, rhymes, songs, books, and a lot of fun!
* Also on the calendar are our regular storytimes at Children's Library and Mitchell Park. The schedule is as follows:
- Toddler Storytimes: at Children's Mondays at 10am OR 11am and at Mitchell Fridays at 10am.
- Preschool Storytimes: at Children's Tuesdays at 10am and at Mitchell Fridays at 11am.

Weird Wednesday!

It's only a few weeks now until the 2008 Summer Olympics get underway in Beijing (August 8-24). To prepare for the upcoming excitement, I want to share with you a new book called Gold Medal for Weird by Kevin Sylvester.

Mr. Sylvester is a reporter and radio sports host who decided there have been enough books written about the super-athletes. He wanted to write a book about the other athletes- the clumsy, the goofy, and the cheaters. This book is full of funny short stories and silly little facts about the lesser known athletes and seldom told stories in Olympic history.

One of my favorite stories from the book tells about the strange competition of pistol dueling at the 1906 Athens Games. Rather than shooting at one another, the duelers shot at elegant dummies wearing frock coats and big bull's-eyes on their chests!

Another story tells of Speedskater Paul Enock who competed in the 1962 Olympics. Up until that time, speedskaters had competed in warn, heavy clothes. Mr. Enock decided to try skating in his wife's panty hose because they were lighter and smoother, and he broke the world record!

What's the buzz at the library, you ask? For starters, The Center For Ecosystem Survival will present an exciting program at Main Library next Wednesday at 3:30 pm on the front lawn. This will be an opportunity for children to learn about the rainforest, how insects affect the ecosystem and maybe, just maybe, get to hold a live walking stick! Most importantly, the kids will learn how they can participate in ways that will contribute to saving tropical rainforests or coral reefs. Everybody is invited but school age children will benefit the most from this presentation.

We're having another heat wave, so here are some books with ideas to beat the heat. (You can check on the title to reserve the book).

Make something cool and wonderful to eat! Check out Cool Sweets & Treats to Eat, with recipes for things like Campfire-free S'mores, No-bake Energy Bars and Dilly and Chilly Dips for Veggies. Yum!

While we're on the subject of treats, summertime is always ice cream time. Besides getting some to eat, how about reading about the history and production of ice cream? For the "inside scoop" take a look at Paul Fleisher's Ice Cream Treats.

Swimming's a great way to keep cool. The Library has a number of children's books on learning to swim or working on your technique. One is Crossingham's and Walker's Swimming in Action. Need the pool hours at Rinconada? Here you go.

When the weather's hot, just being near water is great. How about hanging out at Boronda Lake at our own Foothills Park? You can go fishing in the lake (with a license). Here's more information about the beautiful park, which is open to Palo Alto residents and their guests. Need to learn how to catch more fish? We've got some great books, of course. Kid-Friendly Recipes for July 4th

Many families are staying home on July 4th due to outrageous gas prices. Have fun at home with these kid-friendly, July 4th recipes:

B.L.T. Hot Dogs (Emeril's There's a Chef in my World! by Emeril Lagasse, click here to reserve this item)
Ingredients: 4 hot dogs, 4 thin-cut bacon slices, 4 lettuce leaves, 4 hot dog buns, 1/2 cup diced tomatoes, mustard, mayonnaise

1) Position rack in the center of your toaster oven and preheat to 375 degrees
2) Wrap each hot dog with a slice of bacon, tucking both edges under so the bacon does not come unwrapped during baking.

3) Place the hot dogs on a small baking sheet. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the bacon is crispy and well browned. Using oven mitts or pot holders, remove the baking sheet from the oven.

4) Stack the lettuce leaves on top of each other and roll up tightly. Thinly slice into ribbonlike strips.

5) Place one hot dog in each bun and top with diced tomatoes and lettuce.

6) Serve with mustard and mayonnaise or other desired condiments.

B'Namich (The Mash & Smash Cookbook by Marian Buck-Murray, click here to reserve this item)

Ingredients: 1 Banana, Peanut Butter, Raisins

1) Peel the banana and cut in half the long way on a cutting board.

2) Spread one banana half with peanut butter and sprinkle it with raisins.

3)Put the banana back together and cut it in half the short way.

4) Eat your B'namich like a sandwich.

Parmesan Pita Triangles (You're the Cook! by Katie Wilton, click here to reserve this item)

Ingredients: 2 pita pockets, 4 tablespoons of butter, 1 cup of grated Parmesan, plus optional toppings like pepperoni, pineapple, and chopped herbs)

1) Using scissors, cut pita pockets in half, then open the pita and separate the sides so that you have 4 semi-circular pieces.
2) Spread about half a tablespoon of butter on each semi-circle, cut in half, sprinkle with cheese and top with optional toppings.
3) Place on aluminum foil in toaster oven and toast until the cheese is melted and they are light brown. Serve warm.

Baby Storytime returns! The newest 8-week session begins this Tuesday, July 1st, at the Downtown Library (270 Forest Ave.) at 11:00 am. This lapsit program is for babies 6 - 18 months old and their parents or caregivers.

Wacky Wednesday: Tom McCormick, the Story-Bug Fella. Come see this one-man show with lots of insect theatrics, colorful characters and natural sound effects. This program is part of the Catch the Reading Bug summer reading program. Children of all ages are welcome to attend at the Downtown Library on July 2nd at 3:30 pm. A New Harry Potter Story!!!!

Well, it's a very short Harry Potter story. In fact, it was written on a two-sided card. And Harry isn't in it since he wasn't born yet. But it was written by J. K. Rowling, and it's a prequel to the books. Waterstone's had a contest called What's Your Story? Famous authors contributed to it, including Rowling. Take a look on their website, click on Authors in the upper right, and then choose J. K. Rowling. Be sure to read both sides to get the whole story.

There are many authors who contributed stories who write for adults; their stories will not be of interest to children. But it's fun for Rowling's fans to see a story written in her own handwriting.

By the way, did you know there's going to be a new cover for the first Harry Potter book in honor of it's 10th anniversary? Here's what it's going to look like:

Paws to Read Returns!

The pilot program was such a success that we're starting a new Paws to Read series. This unique reading program improves children’s literacy skills and gives them a great sense of accomplishment. How does it work? They read to dogs. Yes, dogs! Children who sign up will have the opportunity to read to guide dogs or registered therapy dogs. The dogs volunteer with their owners. Children sign up (for any or all dates) at Children's Library or by calling 329-2436 (select the Children's Reference option) or emailing librarychildrensservices@cityofpaloalto.org.

Children will read for 20 minutes. The programs will be held at Children's Library from 2:30 to 3:30 pm on the following Saturdays:

July 12th

August 16th

September 20th

October 18th

November 15th.

New Non-fiction- Take a Look!

When I was looking at our new non-fiction books recently, I noticed a trend. Many of the books discuss ways kids can explore the world around them and/or help the environment. I'd like to introduce you to three of these books:

50 ways to Save the Earth, by Anne Jankeliowitch
Each double-page spread of this book features a lush color photo opposite a numbered action and a description of how doing that action can help save the Earth. From composting and carpooling to eating locally and cleaning up the beaches, this book is full of easy ways to help the Earth.

The Brook Book: Exploring the Smallest Streams, by Jim Arnosky
As with his wonderful Crinkleroot books, The Brook Book is a beautifully illustrated kid-size field guide. Readers will learn about the best time to explore a brook, the different kinds of rocks one might find in a brook, and the plants animals that might be encountered- from wildflowers to water nymphs. There is even a spread on animal tracks to determine whose footprints you are looking at!

Make It!, by Jane Bull
Make It! is a unique book because it not only contains tons of great ideas for recycling unwanted materials into useable items, but the book itself is made from recycled materials. The book's table of contents is divided into four categories: paper, plastic, metal, and fabric. The colorful photos on each page give detailed step-by-step instructions for how to make items such as woven paper placemats, a bottle cap picture frame, a mirror mobile, and a pocket purse.

Here are some tips from the Humane Society Silicon Valley for introducing kids to dogs:

- Childen, just like puppies, need to learn the rules: Children should be taught to pet softly, stay away from food and water bowls, and not to startle the dog while she is sleeping.

- All family members should avoid tug-of-war, ear pulling, pony riding, and rough play: These activities can teach a dog to be rough with humans and to grab and bite.

- Never leave any child under age 12 unattended with a dog or puppy: Play supervised games such as hide and seek, fetch, or blowing bubbles. If the dog is very high-energy, try taking her for a run or walk before play begins, and end play immediately if she gets too excited or wild.

Reading News

There was a report released today from Scholastic that verifies findings of an earlier report on children's reading habits. The study found that a majority of children think it is extremely important to read for pleasure but that number steadily declines through the teen years. It was very interesting to read about what kids think the impact of technology has on their reading. Not surprisingly, the study found that more kids ages 8 and up spend more time online than pleasure reading. BUT, and here's the good news, most kids who use the internet daily are more inclined to pick up a book every day for the fun of it! If you are interested in reading the full report you can do so here. In the meantime, as this study suggests, the more time you spend helping your children find interesting books, online or at the library, the more your kids will love to read!

Reading Aloud to Kids

There was a recent article in The Los Angeles Times explaining why it's important to read aloud to kids. You can read the whole article here. The research concludes that ...."the critical place that literacy develops is the home, not the school," and "... the crucial intervention period is very early in the life of a child." What parents can do to help their children is read to them. A lot. And don't stop when they learn to read - keep doing it! So, how do you know what to choose? Here are some suggestions:

Ask a librarian! The old-fashioned way still works. Bring your children to the library often, and don't hesitate to ask for help.

Use good online resources. On the Library's website, for instance, are lots of booklists, including one of classic read-alouds. Take a look here.

Trust the pros. Use recommendations by authorities such as Jim Trelease. He has a number of read-aloud books you can reserve here. His website's also useful.

The best part of reading aloud to kids is that it's as much fun for the adults as the kids. And it will go a long way toward developing their literary skills.

Books and Movies and Podcasts ...Oh, My!

Here are a few news items gathered from various children's literature blogs:

Harry turns 10! That.s right - this is the 10th anniversary of the Harry Potter books, and Scholastic is celebrating by putting a new cover on the first book. Check it out here.

Local author Jeanne DuPrau's popular book, City of Ember (click on the title to reserve it), is being made into a movie that will be out this Fall. The trailer looks fantastic -take a look here. The fourth book in the series, The Diamond of Darkhold, is also due out this Fall, and you can reserve it now here (or click on the title).

Just One More Book is a podcast site for kids. They publish four shows a week; some are interviews and some are book chats. Take a look (and a listen) by clicking on the title.
