Poetry Friday
Poetry Friday is a growing tradition in the kidlitosphere (the world of children's literature blogs), so we thought we'd jump onto the bandwagon! What we offer up this week is a wonderful book of poetry for the young child, Here's a Little Poem: A Very First Book of Poetry , collected by Jane Yolen and Andrew Fusek Peters. This is about as wonderful a beginning book of poems as anyone could want. The more than sixty offerings by such talented poets as Langston Hughes and Jack Prelutsky are charmingly illustrated by Polly Dunbar.
Here's a sample for you - a traditional British street rhyme:
Happy birthday to you!
Squashed tomatoes and stew!
Bread and butter
In the gutter
Happy Birthday to you!
