Poetry Friday: A Few Words About Forgiveness

A new book just arrived and it is called, This is Just to Say by Joyce Sidman. This is a book about making apologies and forgiving those who may inadvertently hurt you. Some of the poems are funny, some are a little sad but all are wonderful. The book is divided into 2 parts, the first section has all the apology letters (written by a class of 6th graders) and the second part has all the responses. The illustrations are fun and add lots of whimsy to the text. The very first poem is called, This is Just to Say and is written to Mrs. Garcia in the school office. It begins:

I have stolen
the jelly doughnuts
that were in
the teachers' lounge

and which
you were probably
saving
for teachers

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so gloppy

too bad
the powdered sugar
spilled all over my shirt
and gave me
away

by Thomas

Now you can find the response by Mrs. Garcia and find out if Thomas is forgiven!
