Every spring when I was growing up, my grandmother would recite a little poem for us that went:
Spring has sprung
The grass is riz,
I wonder where
The flowers is!
And around Palo Alto we don't have to wonder, because the flowers are all around us, popping up along the streets, in neighbors' yards and especially at Gamble Gardens. Take your child on a walk today and play "name that flower", talk about perennials and annuals, smell the blossoms on the trees outside Children's Library. By the way, those are Ornamental Cherry trees which means they won't bear fruit but, wow, do they smell good. Pack a lunch, grab a book and walk to a park, which shouldn't be too hard to find because there are 36 of them to choose from! So enjoy the beginning of spring and all it has to offer.
