Daniel Pinkwater is a funny, wacky writer who has been working on a new fiction series for older kids. What's great is that he is also publishing them in serial form online, before they're published in print. The first book, The Neddiad, came out this way and now the sequel, The Yggyssey, is following suit.
If you haven't read the first book, I highly recommend it (and you can reserve it here). In it, Neddie Wentworthstein and his family take the train from Chicago to Los Angeles in the 1940s, during which he ends up in possession of a valuable Indian turtle artifact whose owner is supposed to be able to prevent the impending destruction of the world.
The Yggyssey is set a few years after the first book. You can read it in weekly installments by going to http://www.theyggyssey.com/. You can also sign up to get email reminders of chapter updates. Pinkwater says that it is not necessary to have read the first book in order to appreciate this one. He also includes lots of cool pictures and extra Did You Know? features. It's great fun to read a book in serial form - try it!
